Why us?For two years, COVID-19 opened new divisions and worsened old wounds - from income inequality to racial disparity. While America has been on the road to recovery, too many are still being left behind. A recent Gallup poll revealed that 10% of Americans were undernourished, the highest rate in decades — and that’s tens of millions not getting the nutrients they need, or the access they deserve. For years, Washington politicians have turned a blind eye to the plight of millions of Americans. Yet, this dark past doesn't have to be our future. And equally important: as a youth-led organization we believe young people are more than just the students of today, but also the leaders of tomorrow. As part of the next generation of American leaders, we have unprecedented exposure to news, education, and experience in the digital world — we hold an unparalleled view on the issues plaguing our country. And why not give young people a chance? After decades of failure, isn't it time for something better, something new? If local governments and Washington officials had done their jobs, tens of millions of Americans would not be undernourished, if not outright facing hunger and poverty. The American Dream is simply out of reach, and we're fighting to make it a reality. But, this isn't just our fight. It's going to take every single one of us to fight with the working-class and relieve hungry families – and your voice matters. We need your help to join us in building a future where no child goes hungry; a future where no family needs to worry about putting food on the table at dinnertime; a future where our forgotten communities are no longer forgotten; and a future where food is a right, not a privilege. Every dollar is the difference between a family fed and a future where food is either a right or a luxury for the wealthy. Together, let's bring a sea of hope crashing down onto the shores of America.

What do we do?Bread for America is a youth-led 501(c)3 non-profit co-founded by William He & Ezra Lee in 2021. Two eighth-graders at the time, they were disheartened to see and hear about the reality of food-insecurity that millions of Americans must endure; with local governments and Washington officials simply turning a blind eye to their plight. And thus, through compassion and radical empathy, Bread for America was born. Now, Bread for America works around-the-clock fighting to feed children and communities enduring cycles of poverty. Together, we’ll turn the American dream into the American reality — one delivery at a time. Check out our About page for more details on how we work and what we do: breadforamerica.org/about.

Where does my money go?The contributions we receive are used to organize local food drives and purchase essential food items in bulk, hire drivers, as well as invest in community fridges. Collected supplies are then distributed equitably by need to our local branches spanning dozens of states. Proceeds directly support local food banks, restaurants, churches, and working class communities impacted by the scourge of food insecurity. Food items, meal kits, and grocery boxes are prepared by restaurants, vendors, and other local partners to meet the needs of each community. Our dedicated grassroots team of volunteers and drivers picks up food parcels and brings hope & security directly to hungry families in need. Every delivery is one less hungry child, one more family fed, and one step closer to a future where food is either a right or a luxury for the wealthy.

Why do we have "local branches"?Local branches and chapters are at the core of our advocacy campaigns and at the heart of what we do, and they are vitally important to preserving our nationwide campaign to ensure that food is a right, not a privilege. We believe that our volunteers at the local level see first hand what the needs of their community are. Our national board, nor our leadership have all the answers or any monopoly on solutions. Local organizers always know best on how to effectively fundraise, successfully mobilize volunteers, adeptly spread awareness, and most importantly - deliver food and supplies to hungry working-class families within their community.

Are we an actual non-profit?Yes!! As of Aug. 2021, Bread for America has been officially federally recognized by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) as a 501(c)3 non-profit organization. All donations to Bread for America are eligible for federal income tax-deductions.
